Mr. C. came and showed us how to cut flowers out of the squares we painted.
We also made stems and leaves.

Read Across America

Columbus Academy has decided to participate in NEA's Read Across America event. A letter was sent home today explaining that each student, if they choose to, may bring in a gently used book that will be donated to a local program in need. Students may bring in their book beginning February 28th. This is a great opportunity and an age appropriate way for our kids to give back and participate in a service project they can understand. For more information, please read the handout that was sent home today or go online at http://www.nea.org/readacross.

Zero the Hero

Thank you to Greyson and his mother who came in today to share a craft for Zero the Hero. We made stoplights! Did you know who invented the stoplight? Do you know why? Ask me to share with you. A handout was given to each child in addition to their Zero the Hero craft that explains who and why the stoplight was invented. The inventor of the stoplight is also someone we may honor for his role in black history as February is Black History Month for students.

Our Star of the Week

Congratulations to Jakob on a job well done! You did an excellent job sharing your pictures and answering our questions as our Star of the Week.

Book In A Bag

Book in a bag went well today!  We partner read and got to read with a teacher!  Everyone seemed really excited for this new, fun activity!

We will not be sending home a new book until next week.  Since there is NO SCHOOL on Monday (don't forget!), we will send home a new book on Tuesday.

My former co-teacher, Renee Abramovitz, created her own site for parents to visit for additional guidance with reading related questions.  I wanted to pass this on to you www.schoolsparks.com, if you are interested!  There are a lot of great ideas for reading and word awareness!  a.

Book In A Bag

Don't forget...

Tomorrow, Book In A Bag is due!  We look forward to seeing how much all the children enjoyed taking home their book to read!

Flying Saucers

We added flying saucers to the art center!
They were 'out of this world'!

Licorice Measuring

Since it is /L/ week, we measured with Licorice!
Why not?!
Me measured different things and then said if our Licorice was longer (L)
or shorter (S) than the picture/object listed.
After, we got to eat the Licorice!
But not the one we used for measuring... we got a nice, new, germ-free one!
YUM!

Happy 1/2 Birthday, Julia!

Tuesday fun!

Book In A Bag

We read this book to talk about how great it is to read!
We also discussed that it is okay if our book in the bag is too easy OR too hard.
Some of us are just learning and some of us are just getting used to taking home
a book every night!
And remember...
HAVE FUN WITH READING!

Coming home soon...

H is for Helmets

These astronauts are ready to take off in their new space helmets!

We read about the moon today and talked about its surface and rotation. Students experimented with flour and marbles to create craters like the moon. We also talked about the phases of the moon and why the moon appears full, half, and crescent shaped. We added the phases of moon to the calendar and each day our busy bee will record its phase to see if we can establish a pattern.

We counted our 100 items with our Second grade buddies!

Pre-K bees brought in 100 items to count with their 2nd grade buddies. We learned to count to 100 easily by creating 10 groups of 10.

It's the 100th Day of PK!

For the 100th day we enjoyed and counted 100 snacks! Ask me if I finished them all.
We also celebrated Columbus Academy's 100 years with maroon and gray cupcakes.

We made chain link decorations. Each student and a partner linked together 10 maroon and gray paper links. Later we were able to count 100 all together counting by tens.
